Reign Check, by Michelle Rowen (Demon Princess #2)

Nikki Donovan, Demon Princess, is back--and stuck in a love triangle that's straight out of hell!

Fresh from finding out that she is a demon princess, fighting her aunt for her life, and rescuing her father from being poisoned, Nikki Donovan is looking forward to getting back to her regular high school life. But when Rhys, the handsome king of the faery realm, decides to show up at her school as a "foreign exchange student," Nikki knows this won't be possible. Couple with this a whole host of other problems: there's a new prophecy that claims she will destroy everyone. Her conflicted feelings for Rhys and her boyfriend, Michael, are getting in the way of their relationship. Her best friend Melinda just might be a demon-slayer-in-training, and her old crush Chris might know of her demon side. Throw in a field trip to none other than Hell itself … and Nikki's going to be hoping for a rain check on more than just her homework!

Maybe it's because they both have the word "princess" in their titles, but the Demon Princess books, more specifically Nikki herself, remind me of the Princess Diaries books. The main difference being, of course, that instead of being a princess of a random tiny European principality, Nikki is the princess of the Shadowlands. In my own very not humble opinion, that is way cooler.

So, the spoiled Nikki has some new adventures while once again, unsuccessfully trying to deny her love for the one guy she can't have, the mysterious Michael. This relationship is really sad because if she was allowed to be with him, I don't think there would be any attraction. If she was allowed to be with him she would transfer her affections to Rhys, the fairy king, because he is the second most unattainable guy she knows. If she was smart, which she isn't, she'd keep her lips to herself and leave the heartaches to the grown-ups in her life.

Why is it that every human the supernatural main character spends an extended amount of time with has to turn out to be something more? A demon-slayer-in-training? Seriously? What are the chances that the one demon-slayer and the one demon in the same high school would become best friends? And of course, Chris is somehow involved in everything too. Statistically, this book does not make sense.
