** spoiler alert **
A great end to a great
trilogy. At the end of Torn I had no idea how all of Wendy's many
problems could be fixed. Her mother was dying, leaving her to take over
the management of a kingdom of people who don't really know or like her.
She's in love with a tracker, Finn, who she can never be with, and
she's sort of being forced to marry her friend Tove who doesn't know
that she knows that he's gay. To add to all of her relationship drama,
Wendy may or may not have feelings for a troublesome Vittra prince who
most definitely has feelings for her. And she found out that her father
is evil and wants to take over her kingdom. The situation Wendy is in
seemed so bad at the end of Torn that I was surprised by Ascend's happy
ending. Now, in Ascend, the story picks up right where Torn left it.
Wendy is acting as queen and is about to marry Tove. Finn is being his
usual annoying self and Willa and Matt's relationship is still secret.
And then, Loki shows up all of a sudden practically dying from wounds
inflicted on him by Oren, Wendy's dad and the Vittra king, as punishment
for not bringing Wendy back with him. So all of Wendy's confusion gets
ten times bigger because she's drawn to Loki but marrying Tove and
unsure where she and Finn stand. However, an even bigger life-altering
choice she has to make is whether she will surrender her kingdom to
Oren, because she knows he will not stop killing her people until she
does.
I was happy when Wendy chose Loki. I always thought her
relationship with Finn was one-sided, with Wendy throwing herself into
it wholeheartedly and Finn going along with the beautiful girl declaring
her love for him. He cared about her, obviously, but as she pointed
out, not enough to fight for her. Loki, on the other hand almost gave up
his life for her and was even tortured while trying to protect her.
That's either love or insanity. Amanda Hocking decided it was love.
One
thing that bothered me about the ending was the whole pregnancy thing.
Wouldn't everyone be furious that Wendy cheated on her first husband
with the man who is now her second, got pregnant by him, and married him
at 4 or 5 months pregnant? If I was a citizen in Trylle I would be
furious with my queen's discretion. It's one thing for a normal person
to do what she did, but it's another for a queen. She's like a younger,
prettier, female, royal version of Bill Clinton.
5 stars.
