The Goddess Test, by Aimee Carter

The Goddess Test was another author's take on the Greek gods, and although it did live up to my expectations of a somewhat cheesy fantasy-romance with a mysterious and somewhat unattainable guy, it was still pretty good. Some parts totally predictable, others totally unpredictable, which is a bit disconcerting but very good as a whole.

Kate Winters is an average teenage girl (of course) whose mother is dying of cancer. Her mother has only a short time left to live so she and Kate return to her hometown. Kate, who hasn't had a life since her mother got sick, actually makes friends, and meets a mysterious (yes-I used the word again) guy with strange powers named Henry. Henry, after bringing Kate's not-yet-friend back from the dead promises to give her more time with her mother if she'll live with him for 6 months a year. She doesn't really believe him and thinks him odd until she does believe him. So she goes to his mansion and finds out that she wasn't the first one he invited in. She has seven tests to pass-if she doesn't get killed first, like the other girls did.

As dashing as Henry is, I find the whole thing a little Bluebeard-esque. Seriously, he had other girls there and they all died. I think there was actually a Bluebeard mention at some point in the book but it is given in total fairness. Henry seems creepy-not as creepy as Edward Cullen, but creepy.

One thing I appreciated was how Kate actually had the trait everyone said was the one that made her special. For some reason, whenever a character has an amazing trait that everyone raves about I don't see it. Kate's I actually saw and didn't think was made up on the spot. It may have been a ploy to point out how Kate is different from every other teenage girl, but it worked.

Lesson: DO talk to strangers. They may save the life of your friend who just died.

5 stars. I admit-the cheesiness got to me.

In the book she's not described as being this pretty.
